The Charities We Support

Uncles At Large
The need for a program to provide adult male volunteers for boys lacking a father's influence has long been evident. In 1967 the Canadian Progress Club accepted the responsibility of funding the program, as well as providing initial volunteers from their membership for matching. To that end, the Canadian Progress Club worked in conjunction with the Family Service Association of Edmonton in the development of a program format, philosophy and professional procedures.

In 1974, steps were taken to have Uncles at Large incorporated as a Society under the Alberta Societies Act and an office with full-time staff was set up. This office took over the administration of the program. The name became "Uncles at Large Society" on the Society's incorporation date of June 4th, 1976.

Camp WARWA
Camp Warwa is dedicated to improving the lives of children and youth through outdoor experiential programs.

As a non-profit charitable organization, we are dedicated to providing quality at a reasonable cost. We believe that every child should be able to enjoy a summer camp experience, regardless of socio-economic background, and thus the Friendship Fund was created to provide financial assistance to families in need. It is the goal of the Friendship Fund program to fund as many children as possible with the limited funds available.

Our Friendship Fund allows those in need to experience our programs too. The Friendship Fund is sustained by generous donations from individuals, government agencies, businesses and community organizations. Many of our donors are staff members, board members, community service groups, and friends who understand the value of camping. Each camper that receives a Friendship Fund subsidy, is confidentially matched with a donor.

International Children's Festival
The International Chldren's Festival is an annual arts event that celebrates performing, literary and visual arts for children. It brings together artists from around the globe and across Canada with children and families in the community of central and northern Alberta.

For five magical days, local, national and international artists create a unique cultural community for children. We host performers from Germany, Australia, England, Israel, Mongolia, as well as Canada. We shared the festival with community partners, many generous sponsors, and over 60,000 children, teachers and parents.

Special Olympics Canada
Special Olympics Canada is dedicated to enriching the lives of Canadians with an intellectual disability through sport.

The Canadian Progress Club has been a devoted supporter of Special Olympics Canada for many years. In fact, the Canadian Progress Charitable Foundation has been one of Special Olympics Canada's largest financial supporters over the years and has committed more than $1.5 million both directly and through an endowment fund set up to help our athletes attending the World Games

Moreover, many of our local clubs will also attest to the fact that in addition to their financial support, Canadian Progress Club members have also given outstanding volunteer support at the local clubs as well. So often, their members turn out in droves to help the local clubs organize events and competitions and to raise funds in addition to the major support the Canadian Progress Club has given nationally.

Their contributions and support truly help instill hope, health, sport, friendship and pride in our athletes each and every day.

Canadian Skin Cancer Foundation
The Canadian Skin Cancer Foundation was registered as an association in September 2002 and incorporated under the Societies Act on October 2003. Its ten member board of directors represents the medical, professional and business communities. Approval by Canada Customs and Revenue Agency as a registered charity was received on December 10, 2004.

Recent medical studies from the Canadian Dermatology Association and the Canadian Cancer Society have shown that ever increasing numbers of Canadians are being diagnosed with skin cancers. Current Canadian statistics indicate skin cancer diagnoses now exceed the combined total for lung, breast and prostate cancers. The fortunate part of this news is that unlike many types of cancer, almost all skin cancers are preventable. Prevention of these diseases and mitigation of their disastrous effects can be achieved through education for awareness, prevention strategies and early detection.
